Along with these very large plants and the associated enormous investment in them, most of the chemical industry is characterized by high investment versus low labor components in the cost of manufacture. The National Industrial Conference Board statistics list the chemical industry as one of the highest in terms of capital investment per production worker. The investment per worker in a base petrochemicals olefins plant may well exceed a quarter of a million dollars. Once again, however, such an index covers a spectrum of operations, and for a profitable chemical specialties manufacturer the investment may be on the order of 25,000 dollars per worker. Dr Schramm holds 17 patents and has published 10 other books, and over 400 other scientific publications or proprietary reports. Many of his inventions have been adopted into commercial practice. He was awarded one of the first NSERC-Conference Board Synergy Awards for Best Practices in University-Industry R D Partnership, and his work on the development of oil-tolerant foams for enhanced oil recovery was judged to be a Milestone of Canadian Chemistry in the twentieth century by the Canadian Society for Chemistry. He has received other national awards for his work and is a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada and an honourary Member of the Engineering Institute of Canada. 

Dr. Schramm has won several national awards for his research, including the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering - Bayer Award in Industrial Practice and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada - Conference Board of Canada Award for Best Practices in University-Industry R D Partnership. He is a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada, a past Director of the Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta, and a member of the American Chemical Society. He has 100 scientific publications and patents in the open literature and over 220 proprietary research reports for industry. This is his fifth book, following Emulsions Fundamentals and Applications in the Petroleum Industry, The Language of Colloid and Interface Science, Foams Fundamentals and Applications in the Petroleum Industry, and Suspensions Fundamentals and Applications in the Petroleum Industry.
