EN can be associated with important complications, such as nausea and vomiting (20%), gastroesophageal reflux, diarrhea (2-63%), malabsorption, aspiration (1 %), and tube malposition. Associated causes include duodenal ulcer, pyloric channel ulcer, ileus, anticholinergic medications, opiates, central nervous system disturbances, metabolic derangements, and severe protein deficiency. The nasoduodenal method of enteral feedings consists of a tube passed through the nose and down the esophagus, ending in the duodenum. 

Oral feeding should be used whenever possible. Tube feeding (Fig. 4) involves the use of small bore na.so-gastric, nasoduodenal and gastrostomy tubes. Defined diets of homogeneous composition can be continually administered. Tube feeding in this way bypasses problems with oral pathology. 

Since the nasogastric tube or the nasoduodenal tube is the most common, it will serve to illustrate the principles of tube feeding.
