Narrative structures

This chapter discusses packages, the relationships between them, and how to use them effectively. Section 7.1 introduces packages and explains how a package contains names and formal definitions within an informal narrative structure. 

In both cases - which are common, everyday occurrences - we have the same problem as the dream interpreter. We must project causal narrative structure on to events as a matter of course. It must be a category of mind to look for, and to find, causality in nature. Fortunately for us, it is often there. That s why we have survived and that s why science has progressed despite the errors into which our tendency to project narrative causality plunges us. But, we make at least as many mistakes in assigning causality as we make correct inferences. Sometimes we are able to see this, although usually not.

The story of science should include the context of why changes happened. Eminent scientists like E. O. Wilson encourage telling science as a story, and a letter to Science recently urged scientists to use narrative structures like And But Therefore (which was promoted by the creators of South Park, proving that all sorts of art can speak to science). We are story-driven creatures, and science can tell a great story.
