Naproxen generic name

Aspirin (now a generic name) is one of a number of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) others include ibuprofen and naproxen (see Fig. 21-15), all now sold over the counter. Unfortunately, aspirin reduces but does not eliminate the side effects of salicylates. In some patients, aspirin itself can produce stomach bleeding, kidney failure, and, in extreme cases, death. New NSAIDs with the beneficial effects of aspirin but without its side effects would be medically valuable. 

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) are used for many aches and pains and are available over the counter in such forms as ibuprofen (brand names Motrin and Advil, as well as a generic form), naproxen (brand name Aleve and a generic form), and others. There have been reports of depression, anxiety, paranoia, psychosis, and confusion with these medications. Sildenafil (brand name Viagra), used for male sexual dysfunction, has been reported to cause aggression, delusions, hallucinations, mania, paranoia, and confusion in rare cases. Therapists will treat patients who are taking steroids, over-the-counter NSAIDs, and Viagra. When these patients have mental health symptoms, they need to be evaluated by their physician to see if the medication is contributing to the psychiatric symptoms.

An interesting example of a chirality pool material used as a chiral auxiliary, is the industrial synthesis of -naproxen, reported by Zambon [15]. Naproxen is the generic name of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, S-2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl) propanoic acid, described originally by Syntex in 1967 [16]. It is interesting to compare the Syntex and Zambon strategies for the production of S-naproxen (Schemes 7.2 and 7.3, respectively). 

The Food and Drug Administration has also approved two other drugs with similar structures to ibuprofen for over-the-counter use as pain relievers. These new drugs are known by their generic names, naproxen and ketoprofen. Naproxen is often administered in the form of its sodium salt. Naproxen and ketoprofen can be used to alleviate the pain of headaches, toothaches, muscle aches, backaches, arthritis, and menstrual cramps, and they can also be used to reduce fever. They appear to have a longer duration of action than the older analgesics.
