Polymers consisting of but not limited to poly thiophene, polypyrrole and poly aniline have been extensively used to make polymer nanofibers. In general, any metal that can be electroplated has most likely appeared in a nanowire. Semiconductors, polymers, and insulators have also been used in the design of nanowires.Furthermore, different metals can be plated in succession to give striped nanowires. [Pg.26]

(b) R(T)/R(290 K) for bismuth wires of larger dw measured by Hong et al. (1999). (c) Calculated R(T)/R(300 K) of 36-nm and 70-nm bismuth nanowires (Lin et al, 2000b). Bronikowski [4] used poly(styrene-b-methylmethacrylate) to form iron-rich and iron-deficient nanowires. In this process poly(styrene-b-methylmethacry-late) and FeCla were dissolved in acetone and then spin-coated onto a substrate and heated so that the block copolymer formed pillars of PMMA in a PS matrix. Under these conditions Fe " " migrated to the more polar PMMA region. Once this composite was heated, single-wall carbon and iron-rich nanotubes were formed. [Pg.349]

Our group previously reported that radiation induced crosslinking reactions in polysilane derivatives are mainly promoted by side-chain dissociated silyl radicals, and that the predominant reaction is determined by the radical concentration in the ion tracks [14,20,21]. Thus, the distribution of crosslinks in an ion track is expected to obey the equations (2) and (3) given in the previous section, and the crosslinking reaction also gives cylindrical poly(methylphenylsilane) (PMPS)-based nanowires with fairly controlled sizes as shown in Fig. 2. Using the reported value of G(x) = 0.12 derived from... [Pg.226]
