Since researchers at Sony Energytech developed the first commercial Li-ion batteries in late 1980s/ a notable effort has been undertaken to improve the battery materials for last two decades. 

A series of alloys and compounds of lithium with other metals and metalloids have been considered in early time as lithium source anode materials due to their high gravimetric capacities. Table 5.1 shows the theoretical capacity of some element anode materials which can form alloy with lithium.
