NaCl effect

For DMMP, the effect of NaCl on the kinetic adsorption capacity is similar to TBB. However, the NaCl effect on the th for DMMP is stronger than that for TBB, especially at CNaci 5 wt.%. The DMMP breakthrough curves at 5 wt% and 15 wt% of NaCl are displaced toward shorter time (Table 1, Figure 5), in comparison with the curve for the sample without NaCl. It was not possible to measure the effect of RH because of experimental difficulties with the DMMP/water vapour mixtures.

The rheological properties of hydrophobe-modified alkali-swellable emulsion (HASE) thickener solution are studied, with emphasis on surfactant and electrolyte (NaCl) effect. Similar studies in model HASE thickeners have been reported. Two commercial HASE thickeners (HASE-615 and HASE-935) are examined for comparison. In the absence of SDS, the NaCl addition changes solution viscosity depending on the relative concentration of the NaCl and thickener. The viscosities of HASE type thickeners are enhanced by an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and viscosity maxima are observed due to mixed micelle formation among thickener hydrophobes and surfactants. The addition of NaCl suppresses the viscosity of HASE-615/ SDS solutions, with HASE-935 at higher concentrations actually increasing in viscosity with NaCl addition. 2 refs. USA... 

Similarly, Portulacaria afra, a succulent termed weak CAM by Neales (1975) is shifted from day-time CO2 uptake to nocturnal CO2 fixation and (relatively little) acid fluctuation by NaCl stress. This shift is concomitant with a day-time closure and nocturnal opening of stomata and an increased diurnal fluctuation of organic acids (Fig. 4.8). Since water stress was accompanied by the same shift in malic acid metabolism, the NaCl effect here may be indirect and simply related to physiological drought.

The NaCl effect upon the proton-transfer reactions in the excited state of 2-naphthol has been studied by Harris and Selinger [41]. They have reported that the enhancement of the fluorescence of 2-naphthol is due either to a disruption of the water structure by the high concentration of Na and Cl ions or to an increase in the activity coefficient of the excited 2-naphthol. In previous works [53,106,107], it is shown that NaCl is a very weak quencher there is a weak quenching ability for CT, but no ability for Na. The NaCl effect on the proton dissociation reactions in water at 300 K has been studied by means of nanosecond and picosecond spectroscopy with fluorimetry [108].
