The effect of chain length on the ability of degraded amylose to form complexes was studied by Whistler and associates.63 When amylose is hydrolyzed to a degree of polymerization of 20 to 40, it no longer forms insoluble complexes with nitrobenzene, n-pentyl acetate and 2-heptanone, although it still does with 1-butanol and 2-nitropropane.

Deleting a cluster of 16 Vlr genes (2 of the 12 Vlr gene families representing about 12% of the Vlr repertoire) impairs sexual and maternal behavior. Gene-deficient male mice initiate fewer sexual encounters, and lactating females attack intruders less. Furthermore, both mutant male and female mice showed specific anosmia in that VNO did not respond to three of eight tested pheromonal compounds (6-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-heptanone, n-pentyl acetate, and isobutylamine) (Del Punta etal., 2002). 

In Figure 3, a straight-line relationship between a retention index and molecular weight is illustrated for homologous series of n-alcohols, n-aldehydes, n-acetates, and n-hydrocarbons. The compound having molecular weight 130 and retention index 1180 corresponds to n-pentyl acetate. Since the relationship in Figure 3 holds for all types of related compounds, it is obvious that this technique could be widely used in identification of GC peaks.

Where X = alkoxy and R = H this represents the hydrolysis of an alkyl ester. One of the earliest chemical applications of 018-enriched water was Polanyi and Szabo s demonstration in 1934 that the alkaline hydrolysis of n-pentyl acetate proceeds by acyl-oxygen bond fission. 

The AHvap.25 values of a homologous series of organic solvents increase with their molecular weight. Figure 1.25 shows that the measured values of the linear propionate samples and that of the linear acetate samples form in fact two different, linear relations (only the AHvap.25 value measured for n-pentyl acetate deviates clearly). The difference in heat of vaporisation between linear propionate and linear acetate samples with equal molecular weights seems to be disappeared for the branched systems. The influence of the structure on the heat of vaporisation is illustrated by the results of the following samples (mol. weight = 102) ...
