When such photo switching chromophores are immobilized on an electrode, vectorial electron flow from the electrode to electroactive species in solution can be controlled by photoirradiation.[37,38] Using an n-octadecanethiol-modified gold electrode incorporated with diarylethene 28a, it was possible to switch vectorial electron transport from the electrode to hexacyanoferrate(m) in solution by photoirradiation.

An early demonstration of SPL was reported by Kim and Bard [298]. They studied an alkanethiol-based SAM of n-octadecanethiol (ODT) on gold using STM in air, and observed that the tip mechanical force induced etching of the SAM resulted in defect sites (pits) with diameters of 5-10 nm under a low bias and high tunneling current. Crooks and coworkers established some of the early considerations in STM-based elimination Kthography of SAMs under ambient conditions [297,299]. Later, they proposed that the patterning mechanism for the SPL induced removal (or deposition) of ink from SAMs in air was faradaic electrochemical in nature [297, 300, 301].

Chemicals. n-Octadecanol (Aldrich, 99%) and n-octadecanethiol (Aldrich, 98%) House distilled water was passed through a four cartridge Bamstead Nanopurc II purification train. The final resistivity of water used in the experiments was in the range 18.1-18.3 Mohm cm.

To obtain a better understanding of the sigmoid kinetics observed for hydrolysis and aminolysis reactions, as discussed in the previous sections, these reactions were investigated on the nanometer scale by iCFM. In these experiments the force required to pull gold-coated AFM tips functionalized with SAMs of NHS-CIO away from contact with an inert octadecanethiol (ODT) SAM on flat Au(lll) was monitored in real-time during reaction in aqueous NaOH and n-butylamine for hydrolysis and aminolysis, respectively. 

Asemblon, Inc. (Redmond, Washington). 11-Mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUDA) with 97% pinity, 16-mercaptohexadeconic acid (MHA) with 90% purity and 1-octadecanethiol (ODT) with 98% purity were purchased from Aldrich (St. Louis, Missouri). Polystyrene (PS) standard with 18,100 Da poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) with 2000 Da polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) standard with 15,000 Da M , PS-PAA block copolymers and the solvents including acetonitrile, acetone, anhydrous ethanol, toluene, and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were purchased from Aldrich. 

Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images of directed assembly of polystyrene (PS)/polyacrylic acid (PAA) blends using alternative MUAM/octadecanethiol (ODT) patterns with various periodicities (a-d) 1333, (e-h) 1000, (i-1) 667, and (m-p) 333 nm. The spin speeds were changed (a,e,i,m) 3000, (b,f,j,n) 5000, (c,gJ<,o) 7000, and (d,h,l,p) 9000 rpm fflc stands for the critical spin speed for each pattern periodicity.
