Nitro-n-hexane. Use 41 g. of dry silver nitrite, 51 g. of n-hexyl iodide (35-5 ml.) and 100 ml. of sodium dried ether. Reflux on a water bath for 8 hours decant the ethereal solution and wash the sohd well with sodium dried ether. Distil the residue, after the removal of the ether from the combined extracts, from 5 g. of dry silver nitrite, and collect the fraction of b.p. 190-192° (13 g.) as 1-nitro -hexane. Liquid membrane enrichment coupled on-line with ion chromatography. Low molecular mass carboxylic acids in low concentrations in air or soil samples can be determined by ion chromatography coupled on-line to a selective enrichment system consisting of a supported liquid membrane, impregnated with tri- -octylphosphine oxide in di-n-hexyl ether [97-98]. The system allows the determination of these carboxylic acids at micromolar levels in the presence of interfering ions such as nitrite, chloride, sulfate, iron, and aluminum. [Pg.580]

In the second series of experiments, the products from the photo-oxidation of diethyl ether, carried out in a Teflon bag reactor at ppm and ppb levels, have been determined by withdrawing vapour samples and monitoring by gas chromatography, HPLC and by chemiluminescence analysis. The major reaction products which have been measured are ethyl formate, ethyl acetate, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, PAN, methyl nitrate and ethyl nitrate. The products observed arise from the decomposition reactions of the 1-ethoxyethoxy radical and from its reaction with oxygen. The data enable the establishment of a quantitative mechanism for the photo-oxidative reaction. In addition the rate of conversion of NO to NO2, determined by chemiluminescence analysis, shows that for each molecule of ether reacted only one molecule of NO is converted to NO2.
