The proved reserves and levels of production for Japan, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Pakistan, Taiwan, and Thailand are insignificant by world standards. In 1979, the Philippines estabUshed the first commercial production in the small offshore South Nido field. This success came after more than 75 years of wildcat drilling in the Philippines. After several additional discoveries, production rose to 0.3 x 10 m (1.7 x 10 bbl) in 1991. [Pg.218]

Unlike other natural resins, shellac [9000-59-3] is derived from the hardened secretion of the lac insect (species l ccifer (Tachardia) lacca Kerr (family Coccidae), also known as Kerns lacca (Kerr)). Shellac is a refined grade of the cmde lac secretion and is the most widely known lac product. Therefore, shellac has been accepted as the common generic term. Over 50% of the world s supply is produced in the Indian provinces of Bihar and Orissa, with the remainder originating in adjacent areas of southeast Asia such as Sri Lanka, China, Thailand, and Myanmar. [Pg.141]

As regards the pollutants monitoring, from the measurements available so far it could be concluded that acid rain is coming to be a major problem in Asia. In many industrially developed and new developed countries such as Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand etc., values of pH <5 are encountered at many sites, and they represent more than 50% of monitored rain events on a regional scale. In some developing countries of South-East Asia (Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia) most rainwater pH measurements tend to be around 5.6, the pH of natural rainwater, and the acid rain precipitation is mainly due to localized industrial pollution. There is some evidence that pH values below 5 at unpolluted sites may be due to the contribution of weak organic acids, such as formic and acetic acids (Radojevic, 1998). [Pg.344]

Melioidosis is endemic in Southeast Asia, wilh the greatest concentration of cases reported in Vietnam, Cambodia. Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), and northern Australia. Additionally, it is seen In the South Pacific, Africa, India, and the Middle East. In many of these countries, BurftbtfdenepseudorneAefisso prevalent that it is a common contaminate foond on laboratory cultures. Moreover, it has been a common pathogen isolated from troops of all nationalities that have served in areas with endemic disease A few isolated cases of melioidosis have occurred in Ihe Western Hemisphere in Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, Haiti, Brail, Peru, Guyana, and... [Pg.379]

For the conversion of gallons to litres it has been assumed that in Colombia the United States gallon is used, with 3.785 litres to the gallon, and in Myanmar the imperial gallon, with 4.546 litres to the gallon. [Pg.41]

Sesamum indicum L. is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. It was a highly prized oil crop of Babylon and Assyria at least 4000 years ago. Today, India and China are the world s largest producers of sesame, followed by Myanmar, Sudan, Mexico, Nigeria, Venezuela, Turkey, Uganda, and Ethiopia. [Pg.488]

Ruby crystals with a similar texture are found at a contact metasomatic deposit in Myanmar, and are called trapiche rubies. Sapphires with similar textures are also known. Trapiche ruby crystals occur sporadically in marble formed by contact metasomatism due to the intrusion of a granitic magma into Mg-containing limestone. Trapiche sapphire is also formed by the contact metasomatism of Al-rich sedimentary rocks. [Pg.254]

ASEAN was established in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Current members include also Brunei and Darussalam (joined in 1984), Vietnam (joined in 1995), Laos and Myanmar (joined in 1997), and Cambodia (joined in 1999). The aims and purposes of ASEAN involve cooperation in the economic, social, cultural, technical, educational, and other fields [54]. Among other cooperation schemes the ASEAN countries have also developed their own GMP guidelines, which were issued in 1984 [55]. [Pg.135]

The significance of the contraction in opium cultivation in Myanmar and Laos cannot be overstated. Although opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan increased massively in 2006, the global area under illicit poppy cultivation was still 10 per cent lower in 2006 than in 2000, due to reduction in South-East Asia. But despite the reduction in the area under cultivation, potential heroin production is up, because Afghan fields are more productive than fields in South-East Asia. In 2006, global opium production soared to a new record high of 6,610 mt, a 43 per cent increase over 2005. [Pg.10]
