Nujol A trade name for a heavy medicinal liquid paraffin. Extensively used as a mulling agent in spectroscopy. 

Mulls are used as alternatives to pellets. The sample (1 to 5 mg) is carefully ground into a suspension using a couple of drops of a mulling agent. As these spectra are not easily intepreted, a complete attribution could be obtained from the dissolution of the polymers using Lewis acid agents.UV-vis. spectra have been carried out on solution, mull in nujol and films. The films have been obtained by casting the sulfuric solution onto appropriate support and successive immersion in acid water. Raman FTIR analysis and photoinduced absorption measurements were carried out on T3B2 and T6B2 polymers. Elemental analysis on pristine polymers are not completely in agreement with the calculated structure formulas because the materials could not ignited completely. 

The specimen is finely ground (1-2 pm) in an agate mortar and intimately mixed with a weakly absorbing non-volatile liquid to form a mull and the paste spread between plates. Possible mulling agents are Nujol (a mineral oil), Fluorolube S (perfluorohydrocarbon), hexachlorobu-tadiene or perchlorokarosene.

Example 1. The spectrum of compounds containing aliphatic chains exhibit bands due to CH3-, -CH2- and =CH- groups, both in their stretching and bending modes. The IR spectrum of a liquid paraffin, or Nujol, used as a mulling agent is shown in Figure 1. 

There are a number of known techniques and commercial types of equipment available for obtaining such dispersions. If a dispersing agent is used, it should be removed prior to or during the deposition of the powder on the plate. If the particle size is too large the radiation will be scattered by the sample. This scatter can be reduced by coating the sample with nujol—in effect, this will be the equivalent of scanning a nujol mull.
