MRP material requirements planning

Planned orders are place holders for process orders that have yet to be checked for planning feasibility by detailed scheduling. In a hierarchical planning model they are interpreted as a hint to the details planner that they should create and schedule a process order. They are often the result of an automated MRP (material requirements planning) run that is based on planned independent requirements and does not consider resource capacities.

Before diseussing the strueture of a eontrol system it is neeessary to define what is meant by a system. Systems mean different things to different people and ean inelude purely physieal systems sueh as the maehine table of a Computer Numerieally Controlled (CNC) maehine tool or alternatively the proeedures neeessary for the purehase of raw materials together with the eontrol of inventory in a Material Requirements Planning (MRP) system.

Creating a bill of materials In products for shape-centered modeling systems, the demand for most raw materials, parts, and assemblies depends on the demand of the finished product. Materials requirements planning (MRP) is an inherently computer assisted method for the calculation of this dependent demand. One of the MRP inputs is the bill of materials (BOM). The bill of materials is a record of information about the identification and quantity of raw materials, components, subassemblies, and assemblies for a product. Standard and other purchased parts, such as fasteners, need special handling. They are neither modeled nor produced in the engineering and production system. 

For the past 30 years the business world has been inundated by concepts and jargon. These include Materials Logistics Management (MLM), Just-in-Time (JIT), Materials Requirements Planning (MRP), Theory of Constraints (TOC), Total Quality Management (TQM), Agile Manufacturing, Time Based... 

There is some confusion about Materials Requirements Planning (MRP), because much of the software that has been developed to do materials requirements planning uses the same name. But, the task of materials requirements planning must be done regardless of whether there is software to do it. 

Material requirements planning (MRP)—A set of techniques that uses bill of material data, inventory data, and the master production schedule to calculate requirements for materials. It makes recommendations to release replenishment orders for material. Further, because it is time-phased, it makes recommendations to reschedule open orders when due dates and need dates are not in phase. Time-phased MRP begins with the items listed on the MPS and determines (1) the quantity of all components and materials required to fabricate those items and (2) the date that the components and material are required. Time-phased MRP is accomplished by exploding the bill of material, adjusting for inventory quantities on hand or on order, and offsetting the net requirements by the appropriate lead times.
