Mouse dwarf mice

Some mutant mice have extended lifespans. The Ames dwarf mouse has a mutation in p66shc, a cell-surface protein that contains both Src-homology and collagen-homology domains. It lives almost one-third longer than do wild-type mice.538 Mice deficient in methionine sulfoxide reductase have a reduced lifespan539 but fruit flies with overexpressed activity of the enzyme are more resistant than wild-type flies to oxidative damage.540... [Pg.1907]

Dwarfism in the mouse is an hereditary trait the affected mice exhibit retarded postnatal growth, lack of estrous cyclicity, hypothermia and sterility. The primary deficit in the two major types of dwarf mice (Snell and Ames) is in the anterior pituitary, which is deficient in the production and release of prolactin, GH and thyrotropin (for review, see Phelps, 1994). The adult dwarf mice also have a deficit in TIDA neurons the content and rate of synthesis of DA in the median eminence, and numbers of TH-IR perikarya in the ARC are markedly reduced. This deficit appears selective for TIDA neurons as there is no change in the numbers of DA perikarya in the MZI (IHDA neurons) or substantia nigra (nigrostriatal DA neurons). [Pg.467]

Lemurs are classified in four families the typical lemurs (Lemuridae) the dwarf and mouse lemurs (Cheirogaleidae) the indrids (hidriidae, including the indri, sifaka, and avahi) and the aye-aye, the lone member of Daubentoniidae. [Pg.98]

Mouse lemurs are active, bu creatures, while the dwarf lemurs Ckeirogcdeus spp.) are rather sluggish all year. Dwarf lemurs are true hibemators, and are active c rly during the rainy season. The fat-tailed dwarf lemur (C. medius) stores fat at the base of its tail for use during... [Pg.99]
