Many of the plastics available today may be bonded to rubber provided that the thermal and mechanical properties of the plastic are compatible with the process conditions required for the bonding process. Fully saturated polymers such as polyethylene and polypropylene are not generally considered to be suitable for the process but can be successfully moulded to cured rubber. Examples of this can be seen on military vehicles where such mouldings work as aerial bases. [Pg.69]

Co-axial joints are also common in the design of filter or heat exchanger end caps. Here, the bonding process has replaced soldering or brazing. In these cases, because stress levels on the joints are low, an interference fit at one end of the joint can provide the basis of simple low cost assembly. If a cluster of tubes are required to be bonded and sealed, the selection of a free flowing adhesive, with the required performance under service conditions in combination with a simple moulded end cap, is the answer (see Fig. 50). [Pg.227]

Adhesion of mbber is limited because of its inherent nonpolar nature and the presence of additives in formulation (processing oils, moulding agents, antiozonant waxes, vulcanization aids). Although, unvulcanized mbbers are somewhat less difficult to bond, most of the mbbers used in industry are vulcanized mbbers. The application of instrumentation to the automatic control of a sequence of operations, e.g., injection moulding processes. Once the mould has been loaded with inserts (assuming a rubber to metal bonded part) into the press, the operation of a push-button starts the controller which closes the press, injects the rubber, controls the cure cycle, recharges the injection unit, opens the press, operates the ejectors and presents the mould for cleaning and loading of inserts. [Pg.50]

Many moulded products can be separated from their excess moulding scrap by use of scissors, cryogenic deflashing or buffing. The latter process has to be carried out with caution for those products which are bonded to metal substrates, because excessive generation of heat will result in loss of the bond integrity and product failure. [Pg.176]
