A great part of the organic additives contains various amounts of proteinaceous materials. The identification of proteinaceous binder could help to explain the unusual properties of the mortars, such as high firmness, hydrophobicity of surfaces, and, for frescoes, high stability [24]. [Pg.170]

Some but not all organic reactions proceed well in the absence of solvent(s). Develop a solvent-free protocol for the aldol reaction using solid sodium or potassium hydroxide as the base. The reaction can be successfully performed on a 5-10 mmol scale, using an equivalent of base. Bear in mind that the base should be finely divided, so it should first be crushed with a mortar and pestle. In addition, the condensation partners should be mixed thoroughly before the base is added. The reaction should take no more than 20-25 minutes, and the mixture should be acidified to pH 5 with 10% HCI prior to isolation of the product.
