Morphologically diverse supramolecular assemblies have been formed from long-chain chiral aldonamides [370-378]. Typical compounds include 28 30. Formation of 200- and 300-A-diameter rods and helical rope-like structures in aqueous n-octyl- and n-dodecyl-D-gluconamide (D-28-8 and D-28-12) gpls has been recognized for some time [379]. In a subsequent work, helical double-... [Pg.69]

Note bacterial morphological diversity is greater in sediments than in the water column but viruses and bacteria are harder to distinguish from detritus. The morphology of Tg thin films is very sensitive to the growth conditions [48— 50]. Most of die earlier optical studies have been carried out on granular films, whose typical morphology is shown in Figure 6-9. However, a broad morphological diversity, ranging from islands (see Fig. 6-10) to layers and lamellae (see Fig. [Pg.165]

However, we are faced with a new problem if different species of unicellular organisms were necessary for carrying out different biogeochemical functions, then these different species had to exist from the very beginning of geological time. According to Vernadsky (1994, p. 459), evolution is a biospheric process and, hence, one should admit that this morphological diversity occurred somehow in a pre-evolutionary way. In contemporary science, a similar idea is defended by W. Krumbein (1996), who deftness this pre-evolutionary state as a non-Darwinian evolutionary domain. [Pg.94]

Thus, we are back to the negative side of the problem of the origin of life because the assumption that life should appear immediately in the form of the biogeocoenoses is also unacceptable. One can only assert that the morphological diversity of the first unicellular organisms could not develop via a trivial , biospherical, Darwinian evolution. Even nowadays, one cannot exactly describe a mechanism for the appearance of the pre-biospherical biodivasity. [Pg.94]
