Montgomery Ward

Toy balloons were introduced by Thomas Hancock in 1825 as a do-it-yourself kit that consisted of a rubber solution and a syringe. Vulcanized toy balloons were initially manufactured by J.G. Ingram of London in 1847. The vulcanizing caused the balloons to be nontacky and not susceptible to becoming excessively tacky on hot days. Montgomery Ward had balloons in their catalog by 1889. 

Still think it s just a business Then imagine Merck announcing, as the retail chain Montgomery Ward did in 2000, that it s shutting its doors. That s it, no more Zocor. 

There were, however, a few developments in the business and industrial sector. In 1910, Montgomery Ward Company entered into one of the earliest group insurance contracts. More physician service and industrial health plans were established in the Northwest and remote areas. In 1913, the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) formed the first union medical service.

Instead of commercializing new products on the basis of these formidable technical capabilities, Mobil chose in 1974 to become a conglomerate through unrelated diversification with the purchase of two major U.S. companies, Montgomery Ward, for decades Sears Roebuck s primary rival, and the Container Corporation of America. Inevitably the strategy failed, and Mobil sold off the first in 1986 and the second two years later. In 1989, 7 percent of its operating income came from petrochemicals. By 1992 it was... 

Exxon, Arco, Amoco, Mobil, and Ashland also entered the mining of copper and other industrial minerals. For Mobil and Exxon, the latter included uranium. By 1993, however, these units had been spun off. A few firms strayed even further afield. Exxon and Arco undertook the production of computer products and provided computer services. Exxon even went so far as to acquire an innovative electric-motor enterprise. Reliance Electric. As mentioned above, Mobil purchased Montgomery Ward and the Container Corporation of America, while Occidental bought Iowa Beef, the nation s most successful meat packer. By the mid-1990s, however, the petroleum companies had sold off nearly all these acquisitions. By then, nearly all American industrial corporations had learned that such unrelated diversification could rarely remain profitable for more than a decade and defined their strategic boundaries accordingly.
