Monolayer randomly assembled

Random interface models for ternary systems share the feature with the Widom model and the one-order-parameter Ginzburg-Landau theory (19) that the density of amphiphiles is not allowed to fluctuate independently, but is entirely determined by the distribution of oil and water. However, in contrast to the Ginzburg-Landau approach, they concentrate on the amphiphilic sheets. Self-assembly of amphiphiles into monolayers of given optimal density is premised, and the free energy of the system is reduced to effective free energies of its internal interfaces. In the same spirit, random interface models for binary systems postulate self-assembly into bilayers and intro-... [Pg.667]

The structure of biological and model membranes is frequently viewed in the context of the fluid mosaic model [4], Since biological membranes are composed of a mixture of various lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates the supra-structure or lateral organization of the components is not necessarily random. In order to model biological membranes, lipid assemblies of increasing complexity were studied. Extensive investigation of multicomponent monolayers (at the air-water interface) as well as bilayers have been reported. [Pg.54]

The higher order alkylchlorosilanes (C8 and C18) have historically been treated in the same way as organosilanes. The reaction inevitably occurs in the liquid phase and is usually followed by a curing step. The extremely low surface of the silicon wafers and the deposited Si02 layers, used for self-assembled-monolayers does not allow a spectroscopic quantification of the surface species. A completely different type of analysis techniques is used here mainly to determine the quality (roughness and uniformity), the adherence (parallel or at random) and the hydrofobicity of the coated layer. [Pg.266]

The use of self-assembling peptides is also explored beyond the medical, pharmaceutical, or cosmetics industry. Areas of interest are among others functional foods, electronics, functional coatings, and catalysis (but different from enzyme research). As an example, peptides can be designed to switch from a random coil-like primary structure organization into an a-helix or [3-sheet secondary structure with unique properties. Short peptides align to form [3-sheet tapes with different functionalities, for example, hydrophilic and hydrophobic on either side of the tape to form monolayer coatings (Boden et al., 1996). [Pg.6]
