Molecular weight viscometric characterization

The polymers initiated by BP amines were found to contain about one amino end group per molecular chain. It is reasonable to consider that the combination of BP and such polymers will initiate further polymerization of vinyl monomers. We investigated the photopolymerization of MMA with BP-PMMA bearing an anilino end group as the initiation system and found an increase of the molecular weight from GPC and viscometrical measurement [91]. This system can also initiate the photopolymerization of AN to form a block copolymer, which was characterized by GPC, elemental analysis, and IR spectra. The Vel data as a function of flow rate, Q, are shown for a 10 g/mol molecular weight polystyrene in Figure A. Both the Ubbelohde viscometric data and the membrane viscometer data are platted on the same graph for a 0.6 urn pore membrane at a low concentration of 100 ppm. The flow is Newtonian. The actual agreement of the capillary and membrane viscosities at low flow rates is always excellent when << Dj., and the concentration is extremely low. At small pore size, high concentrations, and high shear rates the flow can become non-Newtonian. The degradation of the cellulose fraction of the copolymer and subsequent recovery of the polyvinyl polymer have often been used to characterize the polymer. For example, cellulose may be acetylated and acid hydrolyzed to remove it from the copolymer.
