Molecular materials, research challenges

The issues and challenges in molecular sieve science have dramatically changed in recent years and will continue to be redefined. As new and clever approaches to nanoporous materials are developed, the pore size and structural limitations that presently exist will no doubt be vanquished. As bolder endeavors expand the scope of this field, many new applications should also emerge. It seems the progress and innovations described in this chapter reflect a growing interdisciplinary nature in molecular sieve research. It is likely that the importance of large pore zeolites and molecular sieves will evolve in many nontraditional areas. [Pg.257]

Modem acetylene chemistry plays a critical role in the current world-wide efforts to synthesize new molecular and polymeric carbon allotropes as well as carbon-rich nanomaterials. It is rapidly becoming clear that the preparative challenges in this interdisciplinary research area at the interface between materials science and chemistry are formidable and rival those in the more established synthesis of natural products and biologically active compounds. Modern materials research strongly relies on advanced synthetic methodology, and it is hoped that the field will attract many synthetically oriented chemists into its ranks their efforts will be rewarded by the development of materials with unique properties and unprecedented applications. [Pg.464]

A challenging task in material science as well as in pharmaceutical research is to custom tailor a compound s properties. George S. Hammond stated that the most fundamental and lasting objective of synthesis is not production of new compounds, but production of properties (Norris Award Lecture, 1968). The molecular structure of an organic or inorganic compound determines its properties. Nevertheless, methods for the direct prediction of a compound s properties based on its molecular structure are usually not available (Figure 8-1). Therefore, the establishment of Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships (QSPRs) and Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships (QSARs) uses an indirect approach in order to tackle this problem. In the first step, numerical descriptors encoding information about the molecular structure are calculated for a set of compounds. Secondly, statistical and artificial neural network models are used to predict the property or activity of interest based on these descriptors or a suitable subset. [Pg.401]

Many challenging industrial and military applications utilize polychlorotriduoroethylene [9002-83-9] (PCTFE) where, ia addition to thermal and chemical resistance, other unique properties are requited ia a thermoplastic polymer. Such has been the destiny of the polymer siace PCTFE was initially synthesized and disclosed ia 1937 (1). The synthesis and characterization of this high molecular weight thermoplastic were researched and utilized duting the Manhattan Project (2). The unique comhination of chemical iaertness, radiation resistance, low vapor permeabiUty, electrical iasulation properties, and thermal stabiUty of this polymer filled an urgent need for a thermoplastic material for use ia the gaseous UF diffusion process for the separation of uranium isotopes (see Diffusion separation methods). [Pg.393]

Light wave technologies provide a number of special challenges for polymeric materials. Polymer fibers offer the best potential for optical communications in local area network (LAN) applications, because their large core size makes it relatively cheap to attach connectors to them. There is a need for polymer fibers that have low losses and that can transmit the bandwidths needed for LAN applications the aciylate and methacrylate polymers now under study have poor loss and bandwidth performance. Research on monomer purification, polymerization to precise molecular-size distributions, and weU-controlled drawing processes is relevant here. There is also a need for precision plastic molding processes for mass prodnction of optical fiber connectors and splice hardware. A tenfold reduction in the cost of fiber and related devices is necessaiy to make the utilization of optical fiber and related devices economical for local area networks and tlie telecommunications loop. [Pg.68]

Postsulfonation of polymers to form PEMs can lead to undesirable side reactions and may be hard to control on a repeatable basis. Synthesis of sulfonated macromolecules for use in PEMs by the direct reaction of sulfonated comonomers has gained attention as a rigorous method of controlling the chemical structure, acid content, and even molecular weight of these materials. While more challenging synthetically than postsulfonation, the control of the chemical nature of the polymer afforded by direct copolymerization of sulfonated monomers and the repeatability of the reactions allows researchers to gain a more systematic understanding of these materials properties. Sulfonated poly(arylene ether)s, sulfonated poly-(imide)s, and sulfonated poly(styrene) derivatives have been the most prevalent of the directly copolymerized materials. [Pg.370]
