Substitute for Conventional Vulcanized Rubbers, For this application, the products are processed by techniques and equipment developed for conventional thermoplastics, ie, injection molding, extrusion, etc. The S—B—S and S—EB—S polymers are preferred (small amounts of S—EP—S are also used). To obtain a satisfactory balance of properties, they must be compounded with oils, fillers, or other polymers compounding reduces costs. Compounding ingredients and their effects on properties are given in Table 8. Oils with high aromatic content should be avoided because they plasticize the polystyrene domains. Polystyrene is often used as an ingredient in S—B—S-based compounds it makes the products harder and improves their processibility. In S—EB—S-based compounds, crystalline polyolefins such as polypropylene and polyethylene are preferred. Some work has been reported on blends of liquid polysiloxanes with S—EB—S block copolymers. The products are primarily intended for medical and pharmaceutical-type applications and hardnesses as low as 5 on the Shore A scale have been reported (53). [Pg.17]

Shrinkage changes can occur at different rates in different directions for RTFs, particularly UTPs. These directional shrinkages can vary significantly due to changes in processes such as during IM. Runner layouts should be designed to deliver the plastic melt at the same time and at the same temperature, pressure, and velocity to each cavity of a multicavity mold. Such a layout is known as a balanced runner (Fig. 7.15). A balanced runner will usually consume more material than an unbalanced type, but this disadvantage is outweighed by the improvement in the uniformity and quality of the moldings. Balance in a multi-cavity mold with dissimilar cavities (known as a family mold) can be achieved by careful variation of runner diameter in order to produce equal pressure drops in each flow path. Impact modifiers are usually prepared by grafting methylmetacrylate and styrene on a styrene-butadiene rubber in an emulsion process (29,30). The preparation and properties of these polymers has been reviewed (31). Impact efficiency is achieved by controlling the rubber substrate particle size between 1000 and 3000 A in a narrow distribution range. The solubility-incompability balance determines the performance of impact modifiers. Typical opaque compound impact modifiers show high efficiency. High-efficiency impact modifiers are used in PVC conduit, injection molding components and calendered opaque films and sheets. Various types of impact modifiers are available (32,33). [Pg.52]
