Modified atmosphere packaging application

An optical sensor for the measurement of carbon dioxide in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) applications was developed89. It was based on the fluorescent pH indicator l-hydroxypyrene-3,6,8-trisulfonate (HPTS) immobilized in a hydrophobic organically modified (ormosil) matrix. The CO2 sensor was stable over a period of at least 7 months and its output was in excellent agreement with a standard reference method for carbon dioxide analysis.

Different processes are applied to achieve this purpose, depending on the foodstuff involved. The technical possibilities available are pasteurisation and sterilisation processes, sterile filtration and the application of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). The foodstuffs are chemically treated with preservatives. The application of ionising radiation is also permitted in some countries.

This chapter focuses on the general properties of plastics for packaging applications with special emphasis on the most commonly used packaging plastics, and the properties that make them attractive packaging materials. Novel packaging systems such as active packaging and modified atmosphere packaging are briefly discussed as well. 

Speciahzed food packaging techniques such as active packaging and modified atmosphere packaging are active areas of research presently. Apart from the nsnal properties expected of good packaging materials, these specialized applications may reqnire certain other unique set of properties.

APPLICATION OF MODIFIED ATMOSPHERE PACKAGING FOR EXTENSION OF SHELF-LIFE OF FOOD COMMODITIES... 

The above results suggest a potential for utilizing surface fluorinated plastics for modified atmosphere and vacuum packaging applications. If needed, the barrier properties can be improved further by vacuum metalization. Excellent adhesion was found for vacuum-deposited aluminum on this new fluorinated layer, achieving an adhesion index of 10 using the classical cross-hatch method. With this treatment method it was also possible to heat-seal PP or PE onto PET.
