The summary of HETP values of Vital [142] for various types and sizes of packings are believed to be referenced to typical industrial distributors for the liquid. This variation can influence the value of HETP in any tabulation the effect of distributor design is discussed in an earlier section of this chapter. Porter and Jenkins [143] developed a model to improve the earlier models of Bolles and Fair from about 25% deviation to about a 95% confidence using a 20% factor of safety [139]. [Pg.378]

GB-like approximations [41, 71, 119, 161, 187, 189, 230-233] may be derived from eq (1) by using the concept of dielectric energy density, as in the work of Bucher and Porter [130], Ehrenson [131], and Schaefer and Froemmel [234], As the GB methodology has been extensively reviewed in the recent past [81, 83, 213], we confine our presentation to a very brief discussion of the key aspects of the theory. The polarization free energy in the GB model is defined as... [Pg.27]

In a related study Porter et al. showed that a-bromo-y lactams 185 containing a pyridyl moiety can react with allyltrimethylsilane enantiose-lectively in the presence of chiral Lewis acids derived from zinc and 189 (Scheme 49) [142], In contrast to the above study, the ligand of choice for substrates 185 was found to be the bisoxazoline ligand 189. Excellent ee s were obtained in the presence of two equivalents of the chiral Lewis acid. Under substoichiometric amounts of the catalyst, lower selectivities were obtained. Different substituents on the pyridyl moiety were also examined although no predictable trend was observed. A trans octahedral model simi-... [Pg.156]

An overview is provided of the North American PE Foam Market. Historical market growth rate and market dynamics are presented as well as a forecast to 2007. An analysis is also presented of the forces that impact PE foam demand and pricing based upon Michael Porter s well-known five-market forces model for analysing industries and markets. Application of this model will provide some insight into dynamics that should be considered in creating a robust business plan. 3 refs. [Pg.33]

Size exclusion chromatography has been greatly enriched recently by the advent of two commercial detectors, the real-time differential viscometer (DV) and the low angle laser light scattering (LALLS) photometer. The only DV detector currently available is offered by Viscotek in Porter, TX, as the model 100. [Pg.90]

Collinear two-degree-of-freedom model with the Karplus-Porter surface by Pechukas et al. [ 143] (linear equilibrium geometry). [Pg.566]

This dissociative system, which represents the prototype system for chemical reaction dynamics, has been the object of many studies. Child et al. [143] have carried out a detailed analysis of the classical dynamics in a collinear model based on the Karplus-Porter surface. These authors have introduced the concept of PODS and first observed the subcritical antipitchfork bifurcation scenario in this system. [Pg.571]

Type lb supernovae appear in or near regions of star formation in spiral galaxies (Porter and Filippenko 1987). However, Huang (1987) has found that Type II supernovae, most of which probably have main sequence masses between 8 and 15 Mq, also occur in star-formation regions. Therefore this constraint is consistent with but does not require the hypothesis that Type lb have more massive progenitors than Type II. Type lb also could have somewhat less massive progenitors than Type II. In the white-dwarf model, the initial masses are not expected to be low. If the white dwarf accretes at 10 8 M0 yr-1 at low efficiency (a few percent) from the wind of a companion, and the white dwarf needs to accumulate a few tenths of a solar mass of helium before it explodes, then the companion must be able to lose several solar masses in its wind. It would need to be initially a star of at least intermediate mass (> 5 MG). [Pg.283]

Rules of Thumb Since in most circumstances packing HETP is sensitive to only few variables, and due to the unreliability of even the best mass-transfer model, it has been the authors experience that rules of thumb for HETP are more accurate and more reliable than mass-transfer models. A similar conclusion was reached by Porter and Jenkins (IChemE Symp. Ser. 56, Summary paper, London, 1979). [Pg.63]
