Nowadays, computers play an important part in the design and development of medicines. For example, molecular modelling software allows chemists to study how potential medicines will interact with receptors in the body and to determine how their structures can be modified to enhance their effect. 

Modeling studies are most useful when experimentally detenriined structures are of modest quality and suitable force-field potentials and modeling software are available. Although statistical methods such as Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics would be preferred in solution or other disordered states, we feel that energy minimization criteria are valid for static, ordered structures such as crystals. 

The calculations in the next section were performed using the above methods implemented in MOE molecular modeling software (22).
