Sumatriptan Moclobemide

Some of the triptans are metabolized by monoamine oxidase and they should not be used with monoamine oxidase inhibitors. This includes almotriptan (34), rizatriptan (35), sumatriptan (36), and zolmitriptan (28). The effect of moclobemide on the pharmacokinetics of almotriptan was less than with other triptans (34). 

Clinically important, potentially hazardous interactions with alprazolam, amphetamines, astemizole, clarithromycin, clozapine, desipramine, dexibuprofen, dextroamphetamine, diethylpropion, droperidol, duloxetine, erythromycin, haloperidol, imipramine, isocarboxazid, linezolid, lithium, MAO inhibitors, mazindol, meperidine, methamphetamine, midazolam, moclobemide, nortriptyline, phendimetrazine, phenelzine, phentermine, phenylpropanolamine, phenytoin, pimozide, pseudoephedrine, selegiline, serotonin agonists, sibutramine, St John s wort, sumatriptan, sympathomimetics, tramadol, tranylcypromine, trazodone, tricyclic antidepressants, troleandomycin, tryptophan, zolmitriptan... 

Clinically important, potentially hazardous interactions with cimetidine, dihydroergotamine, ergot, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, isocarboxazid, MAO inhibitors, methysergide, moclobemide, naratriptan, oral contraceptives, phenelzine, rizatriptan, sertraline, sibutramine, St John s wort, sumatriptan, tranylcypromine... 

Sumatriptan should be avoided by patients taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, moclobemide, St John s wort... 

Moclobemide markedly inhibits the metabolism of rizatriptan, and approximately doubles the bioavailability of sumatriptan. The manufacturers contraindicate these triptans with moclobemide and non-selective MAOIs. Moclobemide modestly inhibited the metabolism of zolmitriptan but had no clinically significant effect on almotriptan or frovatriptan. 

A comprehensive search of the literature and reports from proprietary manufacturers, identified published reports of 31 patients taking sumatriptan and MAOIs concurrently, but no adverse events were reported, and a patient taking moclobemide 300 mg three times daily had no adverse effects when given oral sumatriptan 100 mg on six occasions."... 

However, a patient who had taken an overdose of moclobemide, together with sumatriptan, sertraline, and eitalopram developed the serotonin syndrome. ...
