USEPA issued the NESHAP for benzene waste operations March 7, 1990, under the Clean Air Act. The compliance date was May 1992. It affects not only equipment leaks but also emissions of benzene in wastewater streams. Eacilities with greater than 10 tonnes/year benzene in wastewater streams are affected. They must identify wastewater streams containing greater than 10 mg/L benzene and divert them to units that will reduce benzene to acceptable levels, that is, below 10 mg/L or by 98%. This rule affected most major refineries and olefins plants. Mobil Corp. spent 10 million on a benzene recovery project at its Chalmette, LA, refinery. The refinery uses vacuum steam stripping to decrease benzene emissions by about 10 tonnes/year. One Gulf Coast petrochemical plant has also spent 10 million on a wastewater stripping facility, which reduced benzene levels from several thousand mg/L to less than 5 mg/L [70]. 

The protonic form of zeolite ZSM-5 Alj. Si,54 O,, Si/Al=35) obtained from MOBIL Corp. and a partially Rb ion exchanged form of X faujasite (Rb4 Naj4 Al Si,22 Oj, Si/Al=l. 75) obtained from Union Carbide Corp. were used as typical zeolites with an acidic and basic character, respectively.

The feasible selective catalytic preparation of methyl halides and methyl alcohol from methane also allows subsequent condensation to ethylene and higher hydrocarbons. This can be accomplished by the Mobil Corp. ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts but also over non-shape selective acidic-basic bifunctional catalysts, namely WO3/AI2O3. 

There are about 10 manufacturers of LDPE in North America. The top six include Equistar Chemicals, LP, The Dow Chemical Co., Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Phillips Chemical Co., DnPont, and Westlake Polymer Corp. Each company has their own trade names and specific grade slates for various applications. Data sheets and MSDSs are available from each snppUer and many have them available on their web sites. A typical product data sheet will cover resin characteristics snch as melt index and density, as well as typical final product properties, such as film tear and tensile and impact strength. The tests will identify the ASTM test methods and the data sheet will nsnally have the conditions imder which the test samples were made. There will also be an indication of the FDA and food contact statns of the resin and the applications for which the resin is suited.

Regardless of how the oil is processed, production of oil shale (like that of oil sands) releases much more carbon dioxide than conventional oil. The lead paragraph of a recent article in Rocky Mountain News reports that Oil shale projects in the western U.S. by Exxon Mobil Corp. and other producers would spew as much carbon dioxide as all the factories and vehicles in Taiwan or Brazil... (Carroll, 2009). About 80-90% of emissions come from the heating that is necessary to pull the oil from the rock.
