Starting with the pioneering work of Myers and Watson (9) on propane pyrolysis, this approach has been successfully applied to virtually all light hydrocarbons (10,11,12,13,14) and extended up to C8 normal and branched paraffins (15,16). Fewer studies have been reported on mixture pyrolysis (17,18,19), especially for heavier feedstocks (20). This type of modeling will be illustrated later with an example. [Pg.138]

DPXC ndDPXD. The economic pressure to control dimer costs has had an important effect on what is in use today (ca 1997). Attaching substituents to the ring positions of a [2.2]paracyclophane does not proceed with isomeric exclusivity. Indeed, isomeric purity in the dimer is not an essential requirement for the obtaining of isomeric purity, eg, monosubstituted monomer, in the pyrolysis. Anhydride manufactured by acetic acid pyrolysis sometimes contains ketene polymers, eg, acetylacetone, diketene, dehydroacetic acid, and particulate carbon, or soot, is occasionally encountered. Thermochemical Liquefaction. Most of the research done since 1970 on the direct thermochemical Hquefaction of biomass has been concentrated on the use of various pyrolytic techniques for the production of Hquid fuels and fuel components (96,112,125,166,167). Some of the techniques investigated are entrained-flow pyrolysis, vacuum pyrolysis, rapid and flash pyrolysis, ultrafast pyrolysis in vortex reactors, fluid-bed pyrolysis, low temperature pyrolysis at long reaction times, and updraft fixed-bed pyrolysis. Other research has been done to develop low cost, upgrading methods to convert the complex mixtures formed on pyrolysis of biomass to high quaHty transportation fuels, and to study Hquefaction at high pressures via solvolysis, steam—water treatment, catalytic hydrotreatment, and noncatalytic and catalytic treatment in aqueous systems. [Pg.47]

Thermal and Photochemical Reactions. Unsubstituted ethyleneimine has astonishing thermal stabihty. The reaction of ethyleneimine diluted with argon proceeds to give a mixture of unidentified compounds only at temperatures above 400°C (339). In a flow pyrolysis system under pressures of <1.33 kPa (<10 mm Hg) on quartz wool, isomerization to give /V-methylenemethylamine and ethylideneimine was observed only ia the temperature range 510—535°C. Propylene Dimer. The synthesis of isoprene from propjiene (109,110) is a three-step process. The propjiene is dimeri2ed to 2-methyl-1-pentene, which is then isomeri2ed to 2-methyl-2-pentene in the vapor phase over siUca alumina catalyst. The last step is the pyrolysis of 2-methyi-2-pentene in a cracking furnace in the presence of (NH 2 (111,112). Isoprene is recovered from the resulting mixture by conventional distillation. [Pg.468]

Reversed-phase hplc has been used to separate PPG into its components using evaporative light scattering and uv detection of their 3,5-dinitroben2oyl derivatives. Acetonitrile—water or methanol—water mixtures effected the separation (175). Polymer glycols in PUR elastomers have been identified (176) by pyrolysis-gc. Chemical recovery ia sodium-based sulfite pulpiag is more complicated, and a large number of processes have been proposed. The most common process iavolves liquor iaciaeration under reduciag conditions to give a smelt, which is dissolved to produce a kraft-type green liquor. Sulfide is stripped from the liquor as H2S after the pH is lowered by CO2. The H2S is oxidized to sulfur ia a separate stream by reaction with SO2, and the sulfur is subsequendy burned to reform SO2. Alternatively, ia a pyrolysis process such as SCA-Bidemd, the H2S gas is burned direcdy to SO2. A rather novel approach is the Sonoco process, ia which alumina is added to the spent liquors which are then burned ia a kiln to form sodium aluminate. In anther method, used particulady ia neutral sulfite semichemical processes, fluidized-bed combustion is employed to give a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium sulfate, which can be sold to kraft mills as makeup chemical. [Pg.274]

An excess of crotonaldehyde or aUphatic, ahcyhc, and aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives is used as a solvent to produce compounds of molecular weights of 1000—5000 (25—28). After removal of unreacted components and solvent, the adduct referred to as polyester is decomposed in acidic media or by pyrolysis (29—36). Proper operation of acidic decomposition can give high yields of pure /n j ,/n7 j -2,4-hexadienoic acid, whereas the pyrolysis gives a mixture of isomers that must be converted to the pure trans,trans form. The thermal decomposition is carried out in the presence of alkaU or amine catalysts. A simultaneous codistillation of the sorbic acid as it forms and the component used as the solvent can simplify the process scheme. The catalyst remains in the reaction batch. Suitable solvents and entraining agents include most inert Hquids that bod at 200—300°C, eg, aUphatic hydrocarbons. When the polyester is spHt thermally at 170—180°C and the sorbic acid is distilled direcdy with the solvent, production and purification can be combined in a single step. The solvent can be reused after removal of the sorbic acid (34). The isomeric mixture can be converted to the thermodynamically more stable trans,trans form in the presence of iodine, alkaU, or sulfuric or hydrochloric acid (37,38). [Pg.283]

Mixtures can be identified with the help of computer software that subtracts the spectra of pure compounds from that of the sample. For complex mixtures, fractionation may be needed as part of the analysis. Commercial instmments are available that combine ftir, as a detector, with a separation technique such as gas chromatography (gc), high performance Hquid chromatography (hplc), or supercritical fluid chromatography (96,97). Instmments such as gc/ftir are often termed hyphenated instmments (98). Pyrolyzer (99) and thermogravimetric analysis (tga) instmmentation can also be combined with ftir for monitoring pyrolysis and oxidation processes (100) (see Analytical methods, hyphenated instruments). [Pg.315]

Thermal isomerization of a-pinene, usually at about 450°C, gives a mixture of equal amounts of dipentene (15) and aHoocimene (16) (49,50). Ocimene (17) is produced initially but is unstable and rearranges to aHoocimene, which is subject to cyclization at higher temperatures to produce a- and P-pyronenes (18 and 19). The pyrolysis conditions are usually optimized to give the maximum amount of aHoocimene. Ocimenes can be produced by a technique using shorter contact time and rapid quenching or steam dilution (51). [Pg.412]

Myrcene Manufacture. An important commercial source for mycene is its manufacture by pyrolysis of p-piaene at 550—600°C (87). The thermal isomerization produces a mixture of about 75—77 wt % myrcene, 9% limonene, a small amount of T -limonene [499-97-8] and some decomposition products and dimers. The cmde mixture is usually used without purification for the production of the important alcohols nerol and geraniol. Myrcene may be purified by distillation but every precaution must be taken to prevent polymerization. The use of inhibitors and distillation at reduced pressures and moderate temperatures is recommended. Storage or shipment of myrcene in any purity should also include the addition of a polymerization inhibitor. [Pg.416]

Isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) can be telomerized in diethylamine with / -butyUithium as the catalyst to a mixture of A/,N-diethylneryl- and geranylamines. Oxidation of the amines with hydrogen peroxide gives the amine oxides, which, by the Meisenheimer rearrangement and subsequent pyrolysis, produce linalool in an overall yield of about 70% (127—129). [Pg.420]
