Mixture Screening

Combinatorial Mixture Screening The increased popularity of LC/MS-based methods combined with limited resources resulted in advances that effectively matched combinatorial chemistry samples (i.e., complexity) with instrument time. Richmond, Yates, and coworkers (Richmond et al, 1999 Yates et al.,2001) demonstrated the use of flow injection analysis (FIA)-LC/MS systems for rapid purity assessment and combinatorial mixture screening, respectively. These LC/MS-based applications addressed two critical bottlenecks HPLC [Pg.103]

The incorporation of aluminum increases the blast effect of explosives but decreases the rates of detonation, fragmentation effectiveness, and shaped charge performance. Mixes with aluminum are made by first screening finely divided aluminum, adding it to a melted RDX—TNT slurry, and stirring until the mix is uniform. A desensitizer and calcium chloride may be incorporated, and the mixture cooled to ca 85°C then poured. Typical TNT-based aluminized explosives are the tritonals (TNT + Al), ammonals (TNT, AN, Al), minols (TNT, AN, Al) torpexes and HBXs (TNT, RDX, Al) (Table 14) (223-226). [Pg.20]

A potentially general method of identifying a probe is, first, to purify a protein of interest by chromatography (qv) or electrophoresis. Then a partial amino acid sequence of the protein is deterrnined chemically (see Amino acids). The amino acid sequence is used to predict likely short DNA sequences which direct the synthesis of the protein sequence. Because the genetic code uses redundant codons to direct the synthesis of some amino acids, the predicted probe is unlikely to be unique. The least redundant sequence of 25—30 nucleotides is synthesized chemically as a mixture. The mixed probe is used to screen the Hbrary and the identified clones further screened, either with another probe reverse-translated from the known amino acid sequence or by directly sequencing the clones. Whereas not all recombinant clones encode the protein of interest, reiterative screening allows identification of the correct DNA recombinant. [Pg.231]

Heavy-Media Separation. Heavy-media separation, depicted in Eigure 3, can only be used for relatively rich sylvinite ores that consist of large crystals of KCl and NaCl, such as those mined in Saskatchewan (6,20). Crystals of the two salts in the Saskatchewan deposits are 6—9 mm in diameter. Mine ore that is cmshed sufficiently to pass through 6—9-mm screens in this size range results in a mixture consisting of discrete grains of each salt. [Pg.528]
