Several unit processes can be used in the washing process. The soil is mixed with washing agents and extraction agents that remove the contaminants from the soil and transfer them to the extraction fluid. The soil and washwater are then separated. The soil can be further rinsed with clean water. The soil is removed as clean product, ready to put back into the original excavation, and the washwater is ready to be treated by conventional wastewater treatment processes as addressed in the next subsection. 

Some asceptic processes are developed initially in non-sterile facilities and need to be re-designed to produce a sterile product. Thus the type, size and material used for vessels, piping and tubing (particularly product contact surfaces), the selection of appropriate equipment for each unit process i.e. mixing, filtration, filling, etc., the use of disposable or re-usable equipment, the order of unit operations, the fluid transfer between unit operations and...

A good rule of thumb for an adequate mixing in processing equipment is a total strain of the order 10,000-25,000 shear units. This implies a four orders of magnitude reduction in striation thickness. 

Case 1 The available composite residue data reflect the residue levels in the food commodity as consumed. This is the case where either the commodity is well mixed during processing e.g. cereals, or where the normal portion size reflects the consumption of many units of the commodity e.g. cherries. Essentially, Case 1 is used when a serving of a food commodity is comprised of numerous units.
