Mixed approach

It is not unusual for nosologic systems to adopt a mixed approach that contains both monothetic and polythetic elements. This type of system, which is used in the DSM, may require that certain diagnostic criteria are present. Other criteria for the disorder may be definitive but not necessary so that any combination of these latter criteria may be sufficient for the diagnosis. For example, panic attacks and some form of panic-related worry are both definitive and necessary criteria for panic disorder. However, any combination of 4 of the 13 symptoms constituting a panic attack is sufficient for this particular element in the diagnosis.

In addition, the conversion of a compound collection of drug-like heterocycles as might be used in a medicinal chemistry program was investigated. An equimolar mixture of 20 pyrazole acids, synthesized by a split-and-mix approach, was treated with methyl resin 10 (Ri = CH3, 5 equiv.) for 6 h to yield the respective pyrazole esters. All 20 pyrazole acids in the starting reaction mixture and all their corresponding 20 pyrazole methyl esters in the product mixture could be identified by FT-ICR MS coupled to micro-HPLC with a relative mass error <2.2 ppm. 

A number of micro mixers use secondary or rotational flows, which are, e.g., created by in-channel flow structures, to stretch and fold fluids. The mixing approach here superposes the rotation by a break-up step, which basically is a splitting step [146], This was done based on the analysis of elementary mixing steps and their corresponding transfer to low Reynolds number mixing.

The split and mix approach forms the basis of all solid support-based combinatorial synthetic strategies.
