Migraine headaches causes

All the drugs used for migraine headache are aimed at symptom relief and not against the yet unrecognized cause. Two observations are however most striking first the impact on the concept of pain (for example see analgesics in the chapter on the treatment of pain) and secondly the fact that the pathophysiological principles are poorly defined.

In folk medicine and traditional systems of medicine, various species of valerian have been used as an oral infusion to treat migraine headaches, hysteria, nervous unrest, neurasthenia, fatigue, seizures, stomach cramps that cause vomiting, and other nervous conditions. Valerian also has been used internally as a spasmolytic, a carminative, and a stomachic, and externally on cuts, sores, and acne. Some herbalists recommend it as a possible vermifuge. In Chinese medicine, valerian is used to treat the aforementioned conditions, as well as chronic headache, numbness due to rheumatic conditions, colds, menstrual difficulties, and bruises. Because there has been no extensive research conducted on uses other that the sedative properties of valerian and its constituents, these other uses cannot be scientifically evaluated. 

Qll Sumatriptan is a serotonin agonist (5-HTj agonist) that reduces the cerebral vasodilation which is believed to cause migraine headache.

The source of the ergot strongly influences the type of alkaloids present, as well as the clinical picture of ergotism [171]. The ergot alkaloids have three types of physiological effects they cause contraction of smooth muscle, they block the action of serotonin and adrenaline, and they act on the hypothalamic-pituitary system to inhibit the secretion of prolactin. These properties have led to their being used to induce uterine contractions, to relieve migraine headaches, and to treat prolactin-dependent disorders. 

Drug interactions The concurrent use of sildenafil (used for erectile dysfunrtion) is contraindicated due to potentiation of hypotensive effects Of nitrates. Ergot alkaloids (used for migraine headaches) may cause increased blood pressure and decreased antianginai effects of nitrates—avoid concurrert use. 

A 25-year-old woman with a history of migraine headaches was started on a calcium channel blocker 6 months ago for prophylaxis therapy.
