Middle way

In general, although the results of microcalorimetric studies do not pretend to provide enthalpy values of the very highest accuracy presently attainable by macroscale combustion calorimetry, they do offer a basis for application on a wide scale and are sufficiently precise for most purposes. The conflicting claims of accuracy and usefulness are particularly acute in the area of transition metal organometallic chemistry this review will attempt to follow a middle way between them. 

An acceptable middle way is to cut test pieces from the product. This has the advantage that the properties measured relate to the material as processed in the factory rather than to test pieces prepared under laboratory conditions. The only disadvantage is the limitation in obtaining suitable test pieces from many products.

With some consumptions, it may happen that consumption time is strictly tied to the quantity consumed. Let us define this relation as tc (c). There are many acceptable ways in which you could answer this question ranging from choosing just one vital statistic for each pair to analysing all the data. A drawback of that approach is the fact that methods must be developed to ensure the update of the different partial models involved. From this point of view, conventional autonomous tools used today and the processes based on them are not appropriate to tackle all challenges of product development. A middle way between integrated and autonomous environments is necessary (see Sect. 13.6) [43]. 

Given the potential problems associated with both approaches, a third, middle way, has also been considered. This approach is called grey-box modelling, where the initial form of the equation determined based on the first-principle model is used for data-driven modelling. This approach has the advantage that the form of the equation has some physical meaning and could provide a reasonable description of the process. 

Shrader-Frechette (1991) advocates a middle-way between realism and constructivism which she terms scientific proceduralism . Its rationale is based on three premises (i) explanatory power as tested by prediction, (ii) naturalistic approach to theory choice and (iii) testing the predictive and explanatory power... 

Obviously a middle way must exist. The majority of readers of this book will want to obtain trustworthy values, ones that can be repeated throughout the scientific world. At the same time they will usually want to obtain these values with reasonable speed.
