Upon dissection of the nervus ischiadicus and subsequent reconnection by a microsurgical suture, a protective cover (cuff) of BASYC prevents coimective tissue from growing into the nerve gap, and favors the adhesion of the fascicles, which facilitates early regeneration of the nerve and a rapid retimi of muscle function. The good incorporation of bacterial cellulose-forming crmnective tissue and new blood vessels on the smface of the protective cover is worthy of particular emphasis (Klemm et al. 2005). [Pg.565]

The application is derived from new microsurgical techniques that can repair small blood vessels and nerves by sutures with optical equipment. The well-known synthetic implant materials for conduits of larger vessels (in-... [Pg.70]

The problems described above may represent a microsurgical challenge, but do not call for a tissue engineering approach. This is the case, however, when the injury causes larger gaps in the nerve, where end-to-end suturing would lead to excessive tension, impair microvascular blood flow, and result in scarring [2]. Any... [Pg.135]

Immediate treatment begins by placement of a tourniquet around the proximal shaft of the penis to avoid important hemorrhage. Then clots are removed, and the different structures are identified. Microsurgical approach is required for vascular and neural structures (Heymann et al. 1977 Carroll et al. 1985). The urethra is reapproximated, and end-to-end spatulated anastomosis is performed using a 4-0 Monocryl suture for the mucosa followed by a second layer suture of the spongiosa. [Pg.92]
