The essential step is the efficient grinding and blending of raw materials. The final properties of cement strongly depend on its mineral composition so that raw composition and firing conditions are adjusted, depending on the type of cement to be produced. The microstructure of the steel fiber-cement paste interface was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The interfacial zone surrounding the fiber was found to be substantially different from the bulk paste further away from the fiber surface. The interfacial zone consisted of... [Pg.220]

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is a powerful tool used to study the surface topography of potato chips. Figure 11.5 shows that potato chips lose a considerable quantity of surface oil after they are washed in petroleum ether, which allows clear observation of the cellular microstructure of the surface (Figures 11.5bl, 11.5b2 and 11.5b3) (Pedresehi etal., 2008). [Pg.325]

FIG. 1.13 Spherical and cubic model particles with crystalline or amorphous microstructure (a) spherical zinc sulfide particles (transmission electron microscopy, TEM, see Section 1.6a.2a) x-ray diffraction studies show that the microstructure of these particles is crystalline (b) cubic lead sulfide particles (scanning electron microscopy, SEM, see Section 1.6a.2a) (c) amorphous spherical particles of manganese (II) phosphate (TEM) and (d) crystalline cubic cadmium carbonate particles (SEM). The phases, microstructure and chemical composition at the sink side of the PEVD system were studied before and after the PEVD process by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, respectively. [Pg.126]

Fracture mechanisms and microstructure as well as distribution of chemical elements along it were studied with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray microanalysis (XRMA) using Superprobe-733, JEOL, Japan, after deep electrolytic etching with an etchant based on acetic acid. X-ray diffraction phase analysis was done with DRON diffractometer, Burevestnik, the Russian Federation. [Pg.243]

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are used to study the morphology and microstructure of carbon-Ti02 composites. In the case of CNT-Ti02 composites, observations on CNT embedded in Ti02 matrix [111,115] and fine coating of Ti02 on a CNT surface [107,112-114,116,117] are reported. [Pg.487]

Herein we present a detailed study on the influence of the chemical and physical properties of the polymers used to prepare the c/p coating formulation on hydration of the cement inside the coating. The water ingress into the c/p phase is followed by nuclear magnetic resonance, while the cement hydration and phase composition is monitored by X-ray diffraction. These results are compared to those of the microstructural analyses using scanning electron microscopy. The combination of the three methods allows a more detailed interpretation of the mechanical performance of the coated rovings. [Pg.160]
