Such differences in the amount and type of rhizodeposition that occur on the root with time result in concomitant variations in microbial populations in the rhizosphere, both within the root (endorhizosphere), on the surface of the root (rhizoplane), and in the soil adjacent to the root (ectorhizosphere). The general microbial population changes and specific interaction of individual compounds from specific plants or groups of plants with individual microbial species are covered in detail elsewhere (Chap. 4). Consequently, this chapter is restricted to consideration of methodologies used to study carbon flow and microbial population dynamics in the rhizosphere, drawing on specific plant-microbe examples only when required. [Pg.374]

Based on the previous publications, azo dye can be reduced by azoreductase-catalyzed reduction under anaerobic conditions. But still there is a speculation whether bacterial flavin reductases are responsible for the azo reductase activity observed with bacterial cell extracts. In a published report, it is reported that flavin reductases are indeed able to act as azo reductases [24]. Bacteria produce extracellular oxidative enzymes, which are relatively nonspecific enzymes catalyzing the oxidation of a variety of dyes. It was reported that so many diverse groups of bacteria play a role in decolorization. It has been also reported that mixed microbial community could reduce various azo dyes, and members of the y-proteabacteria and sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) were found to be prominent members of mixed bacterial population by using molecular methods to determine the microbial population dynamics [1],... [Pg.63]

Finally, if the metabolism of the chemical results in substantial energy yield and/or cell-building materials, then the microorganism may increase in cell numbers in response. Then, the overall rate of biodegradation will be dictated by the rate of microbial population increase. In these cases, microbial population dynamics, an approach developed by Monod (1949), must be included in our analysis of the chemical of interest. This too will be expanded upon in Section 17.5. [Pg.691]

Using such microbial population dynamics factors, we are now in a position to estimate biodegradation rates for compounds supporting growth like p-cresol. In the situation depicted in Fig. 17.14, we have for the early part of the experiment ... [Pg.745]

To date, although many studies have been conducted on microbial population dynamics with different grape varieties and fermentation conditions, very few of these have been strictly related to Vin Santo. Despite this, various studies regarding the alcoholic fermentation of other Italian passito wines, which have similar production characteristics to those of Vin Santo, have been produced, contributing to the understanding of some important microbial aspects of this particular production process. [Pg.80]
