Papageorgiou et al. reported the first example of an RTIL-based dye-sensitized solar cell system (Gratzel ceU). They found that l-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide, denoted as HMI-I, melts at room temperature [8]. However, the viscosity of HMI-I is very high, at over 1000 mPas at room temperature. Therefore the /sc of DSSC when HMI-I is used (0.75 mA cm at the irradiation of 120,000 Lux [= 1 sun]) is much lower than that when an organic solvent is used (over 15 mA cm at 1 sun). A more complex situation appears to prevail in the case of the solvolysis of sodium 4-acetoxy-3-nitrobenzene sulfonate (NABS) in the presence of poIy(l-vinyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide) (PVMI) in 28.5% ethanol-water (52).

It has been found that l-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide salt can serve simultaneously as a specific stabilizer to protect the transition metal complex against deactivation, a promoter to increase the catalytic performance and a reaction medium to recycle the catalyst.

If the transport limitation is significant, the catalysis occurs predominantly near the surface of the ionic liquid, and the [Rh(CO)2l2] dissolved in the bulk is not fully utilized. One attempt to address these issues was to use a supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) catalyst, as reported by Riisager et al. [Ill], In this system, the ionic liquid (l-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide) was supported as a thin film on solid silica (the thin film offers little mass-transport resistance) and used in a fixed-bed continuous reactor with gas-phase methanol. Rates were achieved that were comparable to those in Eastman s bubble column carbonylation reactor with gas-phase reactants [109], but using a much smaller amount of ionic liquid. 

Curiously, the effect of polyelectrolytes on tl alkali hydrolysis has not been studied until fairly recently. Polycations can bind negatively charged species as counteranions, thus functioning as base catalysts. Morawetz and others examined the effect of a ptKitively charged polyion, poly(l-vinyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide) (Mlm ) 11 on the solvolytic rates of neutral and anionic esters 12,13 (22).
