This group includes the amphetamines, methyl-phenidate, modafinil and pemoline. In 2005 pemoline was withdrawn from the US market because of hepatotoxicity. 

Most drugs are administered to infants and children for the same therapeutic indications as for adults. However, a few drugs have found unique uses in children. Among these are theophylline and caffeine, which are used to treat apnea of prematurity indomethacin, which closes a patent ductus arteriosus and prostaglandin Ej, which maintains the patency of the ductus arteriosus. Paradoxically, drugs such as phenobarbital, which have a sedating action on adults, may produce hyperactivity in children, and some adult stimulant drugs, such as methyl-phenidate, are used to treat children with hyperactivity.

Another major safety concern in the treatment of youth with SUD is abuse of prescribed medications. Particular controversy has arisen around the use of stimulant medication in youth with SUD and ADHD. In one controlled study of adults, the use of methyl-phenidate (Ritalin) did not increase cocaine use or craving for cocaine (Grabowski et ah, 1997), suggesting that the abuse potential of stimulants may be overestimated. We recently surveyed pharmaceutical companies producing antidepressant medication or central nervous system (CNS) stimulants for the European market. Approval for use of such drugs in children and adolescents is limited worldwide. Sertraline, clomipramine, and flu-voxamine have been approved for use in children (for some drugs down to the age of 6 years) for OCD in some European countries (the most wide spread approval being for sertraline in Austria, France, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, and Denmark) and countries outside Europe. Methyl-phenidate has been approved for the treatment of children with ADHD in a number of European and non-European countries (Novartis Health care A/S, personal communication).

There have been a number of anecdotal reports of illicit use of Dexedrine, Adderall, Ritalin (methyl-phenidate), and other ADHD stimulants among college students in recent years. In 2000, University of Wisconsin health officials estimated that one in five of their students were using ADHD stimulant medications without a doctor s prescription. 

PS,PS)-2-Phenyl-2-(piperidin-2-yl)acetic acid methyl ester (INN methyl-phenidate) is a centrally acting sympathomimetic used in the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children. Dexmethylphenidate is the pure (and significantly more active) enantiomer with the R,R configuration available in the USA. The diastereomeric racemate with the RS,SR configuration whilst a commercially available chemical is not used as a pharmaceutical.
