Repellents alleged to repel cats include allyl isothiocyanate (oil of mustard), amyl acetate, anethole, capsaicin, cinnamaldehyde, citral, citronella, citrus oil, eucalyptus oil, geranium oil, lavender oil, lemongrass oil, menthol, methyl nonyl ketone, methyl salicylate, naphthalene. 

While enologists have been interested in the odorous constituents of grapes and wines for many years, Hennig and Villforth (1942) and Hennig (1943, 1950-1951) seem to have made the first systematic studies on the subject. They extracted wine with pentane and after hydrolysis identified the alcohols and acids. They reported the following aldehydes, ketones, and related compounds (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propion-aldehyde, cinnamaldehyde, vanillin, acetone, methyl ketone, acetyl-methylcarbinol, and acetal—caproaldehyde and higher members of the series, benzaldehyde, and furfural were not positively identified but probably also occur) alcohols (methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, isobutyl, isoamyl, and a-terpineol—n-propyl, n-heptyl, and sec-nonyl (2-nonanol)... 

Dodge has isolated a small quantity of an aldehyde, which appears to be decyl aldehyde. Brooks has identified methyl-heptenone, nonyl aldehyde, linalol, acetic and caprylic esters, a phenol (chavicol ), and a -sesqmterpene alcohol having the characteristic odour of the oil. This body C Hj,0, which has been termed zingiberol, boils at 154 to 157 at 14 5 mm. pressure. 

Analysis agreed with the formula CgH g or CgH, . It is probably octy-lene. Pinene appears to be present in traces, as well as camphene, phellandrene, and y-terpinene. The bulk of the oil, however, consists of d-limonene which is present to the extent of about 90 per cent. Methyl-heptenone, octyl aldehyde, nonyl aldehyde, citronellal, terpineol, linalyl acetate, geranyl acetate, bisabolene, cadinene and methyl anthranilate have all been found present in traces. 

Rue oil contains varying amounts of 2-nonanone, 2-decanone, and 2-undecanone (methyl-n-nonyl ketone) as major components, with 2-undecanone about 90% in Algerian me oil.Other components include 2-heptanone, 2-octanone, 2-nonanol, 2-unde-canol, undecyl-2-acetate, anisic acid, phenol, guaiacol, small amounts of coumarins (bergapten, herniarin, and xanthotoxin), monoterpenes (cineole, a- and P-pinenes, limonene), and others (karrer jiangsu martindale).
