A correlation of the observed cis/trans-141 ratios with the yields of 2-heptenes 143 supports the hypothesis that the anion 138 cyclizes. 2-Heptenes are formed from (l-methyl-5-hexenyl)sodium 138 through an intramolecular 1,4-proton transfer that competes with cyclization to give 142 (Scheme 8)97). Thus, cyclizations of 1-methyl-5-hexenyl anions and radicals can be distinguished, since they occur with different cis/trans ratios and since products of anion cyclizations are accompanied by those of the 1,4-proton transfer. [Pg.28]

Very recently, Garst and coworkers 100) have provided a means to suppress the cyclization of (l-methyl-5-hexenyl)sodium with t-butyl amine101 . t-Butyl amine is a sufficiently reactive proton donor to compete successfully with the anion cyclization 138 - cis/trans-139 and the intramolecular 1,4-proton transfer 138 -> 142, leaving 1-heptene 140 as well as cis- and tra -l, 2-dimethylcyclopentane cis,trans-141 formation through radical cyclization only. For sodium metal reactions excess t-butyl amine-nearly eliminates cis,trans-141 suggesting that radical cyclization is negligible. For the Na + N" reaction, 2-heptenes 143 are eliminated by added t-butyl amine, but the yields of cis,trans-141 are merely diminished. As expected, the cis/trans... [Pg.28]

In addition to propylene, other nonconjugated olefins have been copolymerized with CO using enantiopure palladium catalysts. Allylbenzene, 1-butene, 1-heptene, 4-methyl-l-pentene, and cis-2-butene [84,85] as well as hydroxy- and carboxylic acid-functionalized monomers [87] have been polymerized to give optically active polymers. Waymouth, Takaya and Nozaki have recently reported the enantioselective cyclocopolymerization of 1,5-hexadiene and CO [88,89]. [Pg.1267]
