Methonium Compounds. The polymethylene bistrimethyl ammonium series has been investigated since the nineteenth century [see Colquhoun (285)]. This series of compounds consists of two quaternary ammonium groups joined by a polymethylene chain of variable length. The ability to predict accurately the binding conformation of tacrine, deca-methonium, edrophonium and huperzine gave confidence that we could use our model to evaluate the binding conformation of aminopyridazine compounds (Fig. 11.1).

An arrow poison from a blowgun is often used by native peoples of South America for hunting. Three kinds of poisons are known (as explained in Chapter 1.5 and Chapter 2.15). The toxic constituents from these poisons are alkaloids, including J-tubocurarine (J-Tc),a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid, and C-curarine, a bisindole alkaloid in the Strychnos series. Deca-methonium (Chapter 1.5), a synthetic compound based on the chemical structure of d-Tc, was formerly used as a muscle relaxant in surgery. 

The Raman spectra of the spacer-related compounds TMB, HMB, OMB, and DMB have also been examined. The crystal structures of hexa- and decamethonimn bromides [7] were elucidated by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, which showed that the molecular chain, which included the two nitrogen atoms and one CH3 carbon atom of the terminal N(CH2>3 groups, was in a fully extended form. Thus, the methonium bromide chains should provide evidence for the accordion vibrational bands.
