Methenamine oxidant

Incompatible with alkalis, heavy metal ions, especially copper and iron, oxidizing materials, methenamine, phenylephrine hydrochloride, pyrilamine maleate, salicylamide, sodium nitrite, sodium salicylate, theobromine salicylate, and picot-amide. Additionally, ascorbic acid has been found to interfere with certain colorimetric assays by reducing the intensity of the color produced. ... [Pg.49]

Pharmaceutical Incompat, (from Remington s Pharmaceutical Sciences) Aspirin forms a damp to pasty mass when triturated with acetanilide, phenacetin, antipyrine, amidopyrine, methenamine, phenol or phenyl salicylate. Powders containing aspirin with an alkali salt such as sodium bicarbonate become gummy on contact with atmospheric moisture. Hydrolysis oecnrs in admixture with salts contg water of crystallization. Solns of the alkaline acetates and citrates, as well as alkalies themselves, dissolve aspirin but the result -ing solns hydrolyze rapidly to form salts of acetic and salicylic acids. Sugar and glycerol have been shown to hinder this decompn. Aspirin very slowly liberates hydriodic acid from potassium or sodium iodide. Subsequent oxidation by air produces free iodine. [Pg.134]

Hexamethylenetetramine (E239), also known as urotropine, hexamine, methenamine or 1,3,5,7-tetraazaadamantane (8-57), arises as a reaction product of formaldehyde with ammonia. Its preservation effect appears to be due to the gradual liberation of formaldehyde (E240, which is not approved in the EU) and its oxidation product formic acid under acid conditions or in the presence of proteins. The most abundant end-product of formaldehyde in cheeses preserved with hexamethylenetetramine is spinacine, 4,5,5,7-tetrahydro-3//-imidazo[4,5-d]pyridine-6-carboxyhc acid (11-6), derived from the N-terminal histidine residue in y-casein. [Pg.864]
