Meteorological information which has been useful to receptor model studies includes temperature, relative humidity, mixing height, windspeed and wind direction. The wind direction is particularly important for the verification of certain receptor model source contribution predictions definite differences should exist between samples on which the source is upwind and downwind of the receptor. 

Storms sampled by this network were pre-selected based on synoptic meteorological information in an attempt to sample cyclonic frontal rain that was fairly uniform over the 80 km. extent of our network. The sampling protocol required that a period of good atmospheric ventilation preceed rain sampling. Dry deposition was not evaluated but is expected to be small compared to wet deposition due to low ambient pollutant concentrations during rainy weather. 

The horizontal and vertical resolutions of the model depend on a resolution of the meteorological and emission data. At present the model run over a 0.2° x 0.2° horizontal grid (Fig. 16.3b), and it has a vertical resolution of 25 levels. These vertical levels cover the lowest 3 km of the troposphere. The amount of chemical compounds, which is transported from the free troposphere into the atmospheric boundary layer, is determined by the meteorological information and the concentration of the chemical compounds in the free tropospheric. These concentrations depend on the longitude, latitude, land/sea and month (Gross et al. 2005). The advection is solved using the Bott and PPM schemes (Bott 1989 Colella 1984).

After the late phase, ERS will be useful for the detailed analysis of environmental consequences and doses, using real meteorological information and source term and the release information. 

Because this system uses real-time meteorological information, particle tracking, and accounts for complexity of terrain, it is a numerically complex tool that does not operate on a desktop personal computer and requires trained personnel for operation and interpretation.

The use of real-time meteorological information (i.e. wind direction and velocity) and the characteristics of the eruption (emission rate) allows the selection of the scenario and its incorporation into the GIS. The impact of the geoevent on the territory is then easily evidenced because a map quickly identifies the impact area and the potential WWTs, which are involved at different time from the starting of the eruption. Their identification allows focusing on the mitigation actions for the plants.
