Metals ductile

White lustrous metal ductile when free of oxygen low density high strength metal. [Pg.943]

Atomic wl. 26.98. Density 2.70. Silver-white metal ductile, malleable, able to take a High polish. Amphoteric. Will burn in oxygen with white Rome. [Pg.64]

Uranium is a while metal, ductile, malleable, and capable of taking a high polish, but tarnishes readily on exposure to the atmosphere. Finely divided uranium burns upon exposure to air, and the compact metal burns when heated in air at 170 0 Uranium metal slowly decomposes water at ordinary temperatures and rapidly at 100 0 is soluble in HC1 and in HN03 and is nnattacked by alkalis. Chemically related to chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten and, like thorium, is radioactive. In the radioactive decomposition radium is formed. Discovered by Klaproth in 1789. [Pg.1646]

Because elaborate equipment is required to test metal ductility, we tested the ductility of the copper, silver, and iron wires in Activity 6.1 indirectly. Ductility is a physical property of metals that allows them to be drawn or stretched into thin threads without the metal breaking. Two of the most ductile metals are gold and silver. One gram of gold can be drawn into a thread two miles long 3 Threads can be used as lines in art. We know that lines in art are used to communicate what we see and feel. A thread, used as a line, can enhance a sculpture or even serve as the sole material for the sculpture. Because many pieces of jewelry are sculptures in miniature, threads of gold and silver are excellent materials for creating attractive pieces of jewelry. [Pg.246]

Methods that do not utilize TiCl4 include reduction of Ti02 with, for instance, Al, Ca, or C. The problems are the purity of the Ti02, the amount of reductant remaining in the metal, and the interstitial elements remaining in the metal. Ductile metal has not been produced by direct Ti02 reduction (21-23) (see Electrochemical processing). [Pg.100]

Lanthanum is a white, ductile, malleable metal. Ductile means capable of being drawn into thin wires. Malleable means capable of being hammered into thin sheets. Lanthanum is relatively soft and can be cut with a sharp knife. Its melting point is 1,690°F (920°C) and its boiling point is 6,249°F (3,454°C). Its density is about 6.18 grams per cubic centimeter. [Pg.302]

In metals, the bonding is predominantly metallic, where delocalized electrons provide the glue that holds the positive ion cores together. This delocalization of the bonding electrons has far-reaching ramifications since it is responsible for properties most associated with metals ductility, thermal and electrical conductivity, reflectivity, and other distinctive properties. [Pg.2]

Heat treatment of ferrous metals is made in a hydrogen-nitrogen atmosphere with 3 -30 % H2 to increase metal ductility, improve machinability, and alter electric and magnetic properties. [Pg.172]

Atomic weight 50.95. Light-gray metal, ductile when pure. M.p. 1900°C d 6.11. Insoluble in hydrochloric and sulfuric acids, soluble in nitric and hydrofluoric acids. High affinity for O, N, C and H. Surface reactionwith atmospheric Og starts already at 20°C this can lead, particularly in the case of a fine powder, to considerable contamination. Crystal structure type Ag. [Pg.1255]

The ductility of Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn weldments is poor unless a postweld annealing treatment is used. Solution heat treatment followed by water quenching does not improve weld ductility, and subsequent aging of such conditioned material results in weld metal embrittlement. Solution of the weld metal ductility problem is possible in some applications by using an cinnealing treatment. The treatment of 4-h exposure at 725 °C (1340 °F), followed by air cooling has been recommended. [Pg.320]
