The Problem Train tracks are made of metal, and metal expands when it gets hot and shrinks when the weather is cold. When the tracks are put in place, a gap should be left between the adjacent tracks to allow for expansion. A metal track that s 1 mile long expands with the heat and increases in length by 12 inches. There was no gap between the tracks, however, so it buckled in the middle and formed a V shape. (See Figure 3-1 for a picture of what the track looks like.) How high up did the track rise ... 

Models have been developed to predict cat cracker yields based on operating parameters and feedstock properties (34) These have aided in application and evaluation of metals passivation benefits. Miller and Pawloski (35) reported the use of mathematical models to calculate the benefits of vanadium passivation, and Teran (27) reported the need for FCCU hydrogen modeling and metals tracking to optimize passivation benefits. 

To minimize mechanical stress between the nickel conductors and the silicon, a 500 nm step, which corresponds to the height of the metal tracks, is etched into the silicon before the wafers are bonded. Another 5 pm deep step is etched at areas, which are to be removed, i.e., anodic bonding is to be prevented.

As expected, the corner frequency shifts from = 30 kHz (vertical) to = 300 kHz (coplanar). The effect of the stray capacitance is visible in the measured spectrum for the vertical configuration where a pole at 1 MHz is visible (corresponding to a Qj = 130 pF, due to large couplings through the silicon substrate and to the long metal tracks below the passivation, but still negligible with respect to = 6 nF). 

In the ideal case of a passivation that is free of pin-holes and cracks, a film of water which forms on the surface of the die will only come into contact with the metallisation layer at the windows cut to permit bonding. Fortunately, this is the region where there is least risk of failure due to electrochemical corrosion, firstly because the field strengths are lower than for the fine metal tracks over the rest of the...
