Metallic pigments plastic applications

Solvent dyes are used to colour the transparent paints used to exploit the special properties of metallic pigments, as mentioned earlier. Another use for solvent dyes is in the colouring of many plastic articles to supplement the colouring power of pigments, if the use of pigments alone in a particular application is found to have undesirable effects on the physical properties of the plastic. 

This is a bright scarlet shade metallized azo pigment with a chemical constitution which is not yet published. This pigment is predominantly useful in plastic applications that do not require exterior weatherfastness. 

Applied Chemistry and Applied Chemical Analysis deal with application of chemistry to practical purposes such as manuf and analyses of glass, ceramics, pigments, metals, expls, plastics, etc... 

Complex inorganic colored pigments are solid solutions or compounds consisting of two or more metal oxides. One oxide serves as a host and the other oxide(s) inter-diffuse into the host crystal lattice. This interdiffusing is accomplished at temperatures generally in excess of 1000°C. Of the 14 possible crystal structures, the two most important for plastics applications are rutile and spinel. A third structure, zircon, will be briefly mentioned. 

It should be noted that metallic pigments can also provide both electrical and thermal conductivity properties to the plastic material involved, hence they can let the system serve as an antenna and microwave absorber, for a number of specific applications. 

Aluminum pigments are not overly resistant to acids, alkali, chlorine, etc. For most plastic applications, this is of minor importance because these types of chemicals are not present during processing. Once the metallic pigments are imbedded into the plastic, the resins protect their surface and these chemicals have little effect. 

The properties described above qualify quinophthalone pigments for applications including high quality industrial finishes, coloring of plastics and metal deco inks. Commercial products are supplied as powders, pigment preparations and liquid dispersions.
