Metallic catalysts asbestos supported

Since then Adams platinum has been used in the pharmaceutical industry and in small-scale hydrogenation reactions. When industrial processes requiring precious metal catalysts were developed it was not economic to operate with high platinum concentrations. It was, therefore, necessary to reduce costs by supporting small amounts of the metal on a suitable diluent. Supports iiKluded alumina, asbestos, sihca gel, and, most often, activated carbon. Products from these processes have included vitamins, cortisone, and dihydrostreptomycin. 

Palladium catalysts have been prepared by fusion of palladium chloride in sodium nitrate to give palladium oxide by reduction of palladium salts by alkaline formaldehyde or sodium formate, by hydrazine and by the reduction of palladium salts with hydrogen.The metal has been prepared in the form of palladium black, and in colloidal form in water containing a protective material, as well as upon supports. Supported electrodes. The mixture of catalyst and charcoal is poured into the space between two mechanically rigid walls, with asbestos paper as support and a graphite felt or metal sheet as current collector. No binder is necessary. With such electrodes, both liquid and gaseous working materials can be studied. For the experiments with dissolved fuels described in Section 4.2, we used modified electrodes of this type 6 mg chelate was mixed with 6 mg soot and poured between two graphite felt discs. 

It will have been noted that in the experimentation which lias been described up to this point the use of platinum and copper as suitable catalysts for promoting the oxidation of alcohols has been emphasized by a large number of investigators. In characterizing the use of platinum in general, it may be said that this metal has been employed for the most part in the form of a finely divided precipitate which is supported on a variety of different carriers such as asbestos, pumice, etc.10 The porous carrier may be prepared from liquid paste or materials which wholly or partially melt in their water of crystallization. After the addition of platinum chloride the mass is usually dried by blowing a gas through it, which operation may be carried on in the catalytic apparatus itself.17...
