Metalanguage

Program schemes are sequences of expressions in a particular formal metalanguage and we define them in parts as follows. 

Now we are ready for some definitions. As before, one must define the base objects of the metalanguage, then the schemes written in the metalanguage, and finally the semantics, how a scheme computes a function under a given interpretation. The basic objects are ...

SGML Standard generalized mark-up language an international standard metalanguage (ISO 8859) used for defining the syntax of textual mark-up languages. This enables both sender and receiver of the text to identify its structure (e.g. title, author, header, paragraph, etc.). See also XML, DTD,... 

We certainly do not want to give an extensive review of the possible applications of chemical kinetic models. The intention of this chapter is to demonstrate that the conceptual framework of chemical kinetics is appropriate to describe co-operation and competition among elements of other-than-molecule populations, as well as interactions among molecules. As was mentioned earlier (Section 1.5) chemical kinetics may serve as a metalanguage for modelling different kinds of population phenomena.

Category theory can be viewed as a metalanguage, whose main utility is to create a common framework for seemingly diverse notions. We have already used several of its concepts in disguise and will now proceed with the formal introduction.
