Metal joining processes

Soldering. Soldering is one of the metal joining processes which is obtained by melting a lower melting point alloy which will wet or alloy with the joint surface and then freeze in place.

Heat-affected Zone that part of the parent metal which is metallurgically affected by the heat of the joining process, but not melted. 

Engineering metallurgy mainly deals with the processing of metals and materials in the molten condition. Foundry, metal joining and other related areas appear to come under its coverage.

A simpler (one-step) and more economical joining process is direct brazing in a furnace under a vacuum or inert gas atmosphere through the use of active filler metals [Mizuhara Cl al., 1989]. By definition, a structural bond involves the formation of a load-bearing joint between high-strength materials, typically metal, wood, ceramic, and certain plastics. The first step in the selection of a joining method should be a comparison of the relative merits of the available techniques.In addition to structural adhesives, these include a number of mechanical fastening methods, such as screws, bolts, nails, staples, and rivets, as well as metal fusion processes. Many of these techniques are usually associated with the joining of metal structures.
