Metabolic syndrome components

Increased serum RBP4 levels are associated with insulin resistance in postmenopausal and elderly women (An et al. 2009 Suh et al. 2010). In addition, elevated serum RBP4 is coupled with metabolic syndrome components, such as increased BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, serum triglycerides, and systolic blood pressure. Therefore, other bioactive components in dairy products may have an effect on the metabolic syndrome either independently or in addition to the calcium effect. 

A major study tracked 4,637 men and women ages eighteen to thirty for fifteen years. People in the top fourth in terms of magnesium consumption from foods and supplements were less likely to develop high blood pressure, as well as other components of the metabolic syndrome that includes high triglycerides and insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes. 

Alcohol also improves insulin resistance, a component of the so-called metabolic syndrome that predisposes men and women to diabetes and increases the risk of having a heart attack or a stroke. It improves the ability of arteries to dilate to allow for greater blood flow when needed. Alcohol also reduces the risk of developing blood clots by cutting down levels of fibrinogen, a component in the clotting process.

Recent data indicate that one-sixth of the patients with metabolic syndrome also suffer from subclinical hypothyroidism in euthyroid subjects, fT4 values are significantly correlated with four of the five principal components of metabolic syndrome (i.e., BP, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides and abdominal obesity). 

AGIs have beneficial pleiotropic effects on major components of the metabolic syndrome, which should add to their therapeutic benefit in the treatment of IGT and type 2 diabetes.

Aripiprazole Of 125 patients who were stabilized on aripiprazole for 6-18 weeks before double-blind random assignment to aripiprazole or placebo for 26 weeks, 45 (36%) met criteria for metabolic syndrome at entry [38 ]. The proportions of patients with metabolic syndrome were similar in the placebo and aripiprazole groups at both baseline and week 26. There were no significant changes in any of the individual components of metabolic syndrome between aripiprazole- and placebo-treated patients during maintenance phase treatment.
